“In Argentina, the measures proposed and adopted recently risk undermining the protection of human rights,” he said.
On Wednesday, during the annual report, at the opening of the 56th session of the Human Rights Council, High Commissioner Volker Türk said that the measures they are taking in Argentina threaten to undermine human rights in the country.

“In Argentina, the measures proposed and adopted recently risk undermining the protection of human rights,” he said.
Türk, criticized the massive cuts made by libertarian leader Javier Milei, stating that the consequence of this will be the lack of attention of vulnerable sectors of the Argentine population.
He also affirmed the closures of institutions and the difficulty of enforcing both domestic laws and the proper observance of human rights that this entails.
“This (the measures taken by Milei) includes cuts in public spending, which particularly affects the most marginalized, the announced closure of public institutions dedicated to women’s rights and access to justice,” she said.
In addition, Volker Türk noted “The instruction of the Foreign Minister to suspend participation in all events abroad related to the 2030 agenda”, pointing to it as another measure that stifles human rights.
The High Commissioner urgently urged “the authorities to put human rights at the centre of their policies, in order to build a more cohesive and inclusive society”.
In turn he demanded “full respect for the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression”, an antagonistic attitude to Milei’s “libertarian” measures.
